Getting Married

Your Marriage at St John's Glebe

We would be delighted to talk with people who live in the Glebe area or attend St John's regularly about getting married. A few suggestions to help make your wedding a wonderful day.

The Marriage Celebrant
Marriages are ordinarily conducted by the Senior minister. He can be contacted on telephone number 9552-4164 or by email: office@glebechurch.org.au

Marriage Preparation
Everyone wishing to be married will be asked to spend time in preparation. This helps us explore ways in which relationships change and develop. A course will be recommended by the celebrant.

Making Contact
Please arrange to see the minister at least three months before the wedding. Ideally you should plan well in advance. At the first meeting, details of family, occupations and addresses will be noted on an official form, the date and time for the wedding will be entered in the church diary and a time will be set for the next meeting.

Documents Needed
You should bring with you to the first meeting certified copies of your birth certificates - photocopies are not acceptable. If the certificates have been lost, you will need to apply to the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages for a copy (ph 9243 8555). Where appropriate, the Decree Absolute, dissolving a former marriage, should also be brought.

The Building
Your marriage will take place in one of Sydney's significant historical buildings. St John's Church was completed in 1870, inspired by the vision of the famous colonial architect Edmund Blackett and completed by his sons.

Music
To gain the greatest benefit from the building and the ceremony, please choose your music carefully. Your soloists and instrumentalists need to offer music that is consistent with a Christian ceremony. The minister is able to help, and you will obtain excellent assistance from the organist.

The Organist
At your first meeting with the celebrant, you will be given the organist's name and phone number so that you can begin to plan the entrance and exit music, and any other incidental music you may wish to have. Normally the St John's organist plays the organ. Other people will be permitted to use the organ only after negotiation with the minister and the organist.

Confetti
Please don't use confetti. The dyes in the paper may spoil your clothes, and it is difficult to clean up afterwards.

Photos
It is okay for the wedding to be photographed, or for an audio video tape to be made. However, please ask those involved to be discrete and to have respect for what the occasion means to others.

Flowers
You may use your own flower arrangers. Flowers are normally to be left in the church for the following Sunday service.

Making the Church Work
The church is a place of meditation and worship. You are asked to respect this in your planning. You will gain the most from the building and assist participation in the service if you join us some Sundays for worship.

Cost $1000
